Meditation Seed Thoughts

Borrowing from the four great elements, I assumed my body. My mind, originally birthless, functions according to circumstances. When circumstances do not exist, my mind does not exist either - woe and weal are like illusions: they arise, they also fall. -- Visvabhu Buddha

Meditation is a totally different dimension: you simply watch the mind and in watching you come out of it. And slowly, mind with all its problems disappears; otherwise the mind is going to create strange problems... Mind is your only problem -- all other problems are just offshoots of the mind. -- Osho

Exalted in mind & heedful, the sage trained in sagacity's ways: He has no sorrows, one who is Such, calmed & ever mindful. -- Udana

In the bed of a stream he bundles kindling, and goes back to boil white stones. I would take this single gourdful of wine to comfort him afar on an evening of wind and rain. But fallen leaves fill the deserted mountains - where can I find the traces of his passage? -- Wei Ying-wu

The great path has no gates, thousands of roads enter it. When one passes through this gateless gate he walks freely between heaven and earth.

Hasten to do good; restrain your mind from evil. He who is slow in doing good, his mind delights in evil. -- Dhammapada

By illusion the various good karmas are caused; by illusion the various evil karmas are committed. My body is like a bubble, and my mind is like the wind; this illusory creation has no root and no reality. -- Sikhin Buddha

Can you feel it? Deep down below... The centerless center, such a wellspring of bliss! -- Samarpan

Abandoning false speech, he abstains from false speech. He speaks the truth, holds to the truth, is firm, reliable, no deceiver of the world. -- Digha Nikaya

Zen is open-sided, yet there is no door to it. It is just like being in a void; one does not enter through any entrance because the void is open in all directions.

There is no more worldly existence for the wise one who, like the earth, resents nothing, who is firm as a high pillar and as pure as a deep pool free from mud. -- Dhammapada

Blending with the wind, Snow falls; Blending with the snow, The wind blows. By the hearth I stretch out my legs, Idling my time away Confined in this hut. Counting the days, I find that February, too, Has come and gone Like a dream. -- Ryokan

The source of the life force is eternal - the center within - we do not need to collect it like material things for it is already and always here.

The fever of passion exists not for him who has completed the journey, who is sorrowless and wholly set free, and has broken all ties. -- Dhammapada

The essential function of all buddhas, the functional essence of all ancestors, is to know without touching thing and to illuminate without encountering objects.

Knowing without touching things, this knowledge is innately subtle. illuminating without encountering objects, this illumination is innately miraculous.

The knowledge innately subtle has never engaged in discriminating thinking. The illumination innately miraculous has never displayed the slightest identification. Never engaging in discriminating thinking, this knowledge is rare without match.

Never displaying the most minute identification, this illumination is complete without grasping. The water is clear right down to the bottom, fish lazily swim on.

The sky is vast without end, Birds fly far into the distance. -- Hung-chih

Under blue sky, in bright sunlight, one need not search around. Asking what Buddha is like hiding loot in one's pocket and declaring oneself innocent. -- Zen

Few among men are those who cross to the farther shore. The rest, the bulk of men, only run up and down the hither bank. But those who act according to the perfectly taught Dhamma will cross the realm of Death, so difficult to cross. -- Dhammapada

The field of boundless emptiness is what exists from the very beginning. You must purify, cure, grind down, or brush away all the tendencies you have fabricated into apparent habits. Then you can reside in the clear circle of brightness. -- Hongzhi Zhengjue

Winning favor burdens a man with the fear of losing it. When he no longer thinks of the personal body as self neither failure nor success can hail him.

Abandoning the taking of life, he abstains from the taking of life. He dwells with his rod laid down, his knife laid down, scrupulous, merciful, compassionate for the welfare of all living beings. -- Digha Nikaya

The Flower Ornament Scripture says, "I now see all sentient beings everywhere fully possess the wisdom and virtues of the enlightened ones, but because of false conceptions and attachments they do not realize it." -- Shakymuni Buddha

The mind itself is petty, small, and by merely saying it is petty you haven't dissolved its pettiness. You have to understand it, the mind has to recognize its own activities, and in the process of that recognition, in the awareness of the trivialities which it has consciously and unconsciously built, the mind becomes quiet. In that quietness is the creative state and 'this' is the factor which brings about transformation. -- J. Krishnamurti

Just as a solid rock is not shaken by the storm, even so the wise are not affected by praise or blame. -- Dhammapada

No dependence upon letters or words, but direct pointing to the source of human mind! No stepping up any ladders, but mounting straight to the Buddha-land. -- Bodhidharma

By effort and heedfulness, discipline and self-mastery, let the wise one make for himself an island which no flood can overwhelm. -- Dhammapada

I will do whatever my consciousness feels to be right, and I will not do whatever my consciousness feels to be wrong. Except my own being, there is no other guide for me. Except my own eyes, I am not going to believe in anyone else's eyes. I am not blind, and I am not an idiot. I can see. I can think. I can meditate and I can find out for myself what is right and what is wrong. My morality will be simply the shadow of my consciousness. -- Osho

Having entered a royal court or a company of people he should not speak lies. He should not speak lies (himself) nor incite others to do so. He should completely avoid falsehood. -- Sutta Nipata

The difficulty of Zen meditation is not the training, but the letting go of preconceived ideas. The experience of the true self is a state of awareness that cannot be defined; words cannot express living reality. -- Dogen

There is no path to truth, it must come to you. Truth can come to you only when your mind and heart are simple, clear, and there is love in your heart; not if your heart is filled with the things of the mind. -- J. Krishnamurti

Conviction is a person's highest wealth. Dhamma, when well-practiced, brings bliss. Truth is the highest of savors. Living with discernment, one's life is called best. -- Sutta Nipata

The evolution of man can be taken as the development in him of those powers and possibilities which never develop by themselves, that is, mechanically. Only this kind of development, only this kind of growth, marks the real evolution of man. There is, and there can be, no other kind of evolution whatever. -- G. Gurdjieff

Ordinary men hate solitude. But the Master makes use of it, embracing his aloneness, realizing he is one with the whole universe. -- Lao Tzu

Rest and unrest derive from illusion; with enlightenment there is no liking and disliking. All dualities come from ignorant inference. They are like dreams or flowers in the air; foolish try to grasp them. Gain and loss, right and wrong: such thoughts must finally be abolished at once. If the eye never sleeps, all dreams will naturally cease. If the mind makes no discriminations, the ten thousand things are as they are, of single essence. To understand the mystery of this One-essence is to be released from all entanglements. When all things are seen equally the timeless Self-essence is reached. No comparisons or analogies are possible in this causeless, relationless state. -- Sosan

God is deserting your temple as you amuse yourself by blowing conch shells and ringing bells. The road to YOU is blocked by temples and mosques. I hear you call, my Lord, but I cannot advance. Priests and teachers bar the way. -- The Bauls

The perfume of flowers goes not against the wind, not even the perfume of sandalwood, of rose-bay, or of jasmine; but the perfume of virtue travels against the wind and reaches unto the ends of the world. -- The Dhammapada

Inner efforts; efforts to study oneself as one is and to be present to oneself in the moment. If one is able to do that successfully, the state called self-remembering is the result. When a man remembers himself, he has a certain amount of freedom.

To know self is to realize No-self, as No-self is to truly know one's self.

The doer of good rejoices here and hereafter; he rejoices in both the worlds. He rejoices and exults, recollecting his own pure deeds -- Dhammapada 16

The person who is moving into meditation will be helped if he accepts the world as it is. Worldly people never accept the world as it is -- they are always trying to change it. They are always trying to make something else, they are always trying to fix things into a different order, they are always trying to do something outside. The meditator accepts whatsoever is on the outside as it is. He is not disturbed, he is not distracted by the outside. His whole work consists of moving inside. -- Osho

A disciple should avoid taking anything from anywhere knowing it (to belong to another). He should not steal nor incite another to steal. He should completely avoid theft. -- Sutta Nipata

The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive. The great opportunity is where you are. -- John Burroughs

Once a man is in a state of no-mind, nothing can distract him from his being. There is no power bigger than the power of no-mind. No harm can be done to such a person. No attachment, no greed, no jealousy, no anger, nothing can arise in him. No-mind is absolutely a pure sky without any clouds. -- Osho

This is it and i am it and you are it and so is that and he is it and she is it and it is it and that is that. -- James Broughton

In the world of Suchness there is neither self nor other-than-self. To come directly into harmony with this reality just simply say when doubts arise, -Not two-. In this -not two- nothing is separate, nothing is excluded. -- Sosan

There can be no political revolution, no social revolution, no economic revolution. The only revolution is that of the spirit; it is individual. And if millions of individuals change, then the society will change as a consequence, not vice versa. You cannot change the society first and hope that individuals will change later on. -- Osho

The mountain winds and waters, the pure white glacier sing of something greater than our tiny thoughts. The howl of the wind and the rush of the waterfall mix and marry and form a symphony that no amount of thought can undo and separate. Can you love like that? With no words, only the rumbling crash of thunder as a counterpoint? The primal relationship is one of perception with no concepts to destoy its purity. -- Journeys on Mind Mountain

The act of finding is not for the highest. By being humble you can reach life's goal. Clouds pour down on the hollow of the earth, but the lowest of the wells guards the water as a blessing. -- The Bauls

In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. -- Albert Einstein

Without stepping outside one's doors one can know what is happening in the world. Without looking out of one's windows one can see the Tao of heaven. The further one pursues knowledge the less one knows. Therefore the sage knows without running about, understands without seeing, accomplishes without doing. -- Lao Tzu

Blind one, how can you stumble on a straight spontaneous path? Be spontaneous in your own self and find the way that is born in you. -- The Bauls

No-mind does not mean that you cannot use the mind; it simply means that the mind cannot use you. No-mind does not mean that the mind is destroyed. No-mind simply means that the mind is put aside. You can bring it into action any moment you need to communicate with the world. It will be your servant. Right now it is your master. And remember one thing more: when the mind remains silent for hours, it becomes fresh, young, more creative, more sensitive, rejuvenated through rest. -- Osho
