Meditation Seed Thoughts

If you catch even a glimpse Of your self nature, It is the same as reading And understanding all The sutras simultaneously, None, excepted, Without so much as holding One in your hand or Reading a word. -- Bassui

One is not low because of birth nor does birth make one holy. Deeds alone make one low, deeds alone make one holy. -- Sutta Nipata

You must advance beyond The stage where your reason Is of any avail. Discover the all-embracing Mind that does not come into Existence with the body or die With the body’s destruction, Yet suffuses every act of Seeing, hearing, smelling, Speaking, moving. -- Bassui

Above, across or back again, wherever he goes in the world let him carefully scrutinise the rise and fall of compounded things. -- Itivuttaka

What is this mind? Who is hearing these sounds? Do not mistake any state for Self-realization, but continue To ask yourself even more Intensely, What is it that hears? -- Bassui

All tremble at punishment. Life is dear to all. Put yourself in the place of others; kill none nor have another killed. -- Dhammapada

Just Timelessly Apperceive What-IS Truth/Reality For without Projected notions All has a Commonality, NonThought IS Thought as NonAction IS Action Thus Response when Projected IS mere Reaction. -- Yogajyotii

Cast off what has been realized. Turn back to the subject That realizes To the root bottom And resolutely Go on. -- Bassui

Even when obstacles crowd in, the path to Nibbana can be won by those who establish mindfulness and bring to perfection equipoise. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Better than a thousand Hollow words Is one word that brings peace. Better than a thousand Hollow verses Is one verse that brings peace. Better than a hundred Hollow lines Is one line of the law, Bringing peace. It is better to Conquer yourself Than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. -- The Dhammapada

If one, longing for sensual pleasure, achieves it, yes, he's enraptured at heart. The mortal gets what he wants. But if for that person -- longing, desiring -- the pleasures diminish, he's shattered, as if shot with an arrow. -- Sutta Nipata

If you don't use ordinary life as a method to meditation, your meditation is bound to become something of an escape. If your ordinary life becomes extraordinary, only then are you spiritual. -- Zen

Though I think not To think about it, I do think about it And shed tears Thinking about it. -- Ryokan

Were there a mountain all made of gold, doubled that would not be enough to satisfy a single man: know this and live accordingly. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Do not Fool yourself thinking those notions are You You'll not turn to Salt by Letting Go Proven by a Few, Conditioned not to See Truth Directly just Reflected In all the conditioned notions now must be Rejected. -- Yogajyotii

Meditation is the essential religion, the only religion. Nothing else is needed. Everything else is nonessential ritual. Meditation is just the essence, the very essence. You cannot cut anything out of it. -- Osho

Look directly! What is this? Look in this manner And you won’t be fooled! -- Bassui

The worse of the two is he who, when abused, retaliates. One who does not retaliate wins a battle hard to win. -- Samyutta Nikaya

The true meaning Of the precepts Is not just that one Should refrain from drinking Alcohol, but also From getting drunk On nirvana. -- Bassui

Six windows naturally open, A cold lone flower, Koho strikes the rubbish From my eyes, Crushes the gem In my hand right before me, So be it, This gold has become hard iron. -- Bassui

The past should not be followed after and the future not desired; what is past is dead and gone and the future is yet to come. -- Majjhima Nikaya

Naturally as in any reflection the original is Distorted As we fashioned our own mirror it must be Aborted, We actually only see Reflections of some Reflection So Rendering the Present Reflection mere Distortion. -- Yogajyotii

Food and clothes sustain Body and life; I advise you to learn Being as is. When it’s time, I move my hermitage and go, And there’s nothing To be left behind. -- Layman P’ang

Life is swept along, next-to-nothing its span. For one swept to old age no shelters exist. Perceiving this danger in death, one should drop the world's bait and look for peace. -- Samyutta Nikaya

The past is already past. Don’t try to regain it. The present does not stay. Don’t try to touch it From moment to moment. The future is not come; Don’t think about it Beforehand. It takes a Strong Commitment to yourself then Do It As you do not need to know their location just Intuit, You can avoid the Pain/Struggle with just a Glance But problem is that you would also Miss The Dance. -- Yogajyotii

When the mind’s as is, Circumstances also are as is. There’s no real And also no unreal. Giving no heed to existence And holding not To nonexistence, You’re neither saint nor sage, Just an ordinary person Who has settled their affairs. Easy, so easy. -- Layman P’ang

Having killed anger you sleep in ease. Having killed anger you do not grieve. The noble ones praise the slaying of anger -- with its honeyed crest & poison root -- for having killed it you do not grieve. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Destroying pride -- man becomes endearing; Destroying anger -- man gets rid of sorrow; Destroying desire -- man acquires peace; Destroying greed -- man achieves happiness. -- Satya Sai Baba

Mistakes live in the neighborhood of truth and therefore delude us. -- Rabindranath Tagore

He who knows Self as the enjoyer of The honey from the flowers of the senses, Ever present within, ruler of time, Goes beyond fear. For this Self is Supreme! -- Upanishads

Let no one deceive another or despise anyone anywhere, or through anger or irritation wish for another to suffer. -- Khuddakapatha

Awakening IS the Moment but must not be momentary For it is instantaneously spontaneous though won't vary, Everything that IS always will BE as it IS regardless Likes and dislikes deceive you this is not selfless. -- Yogajyotii

If you want to know The realm of the enlightened, You should make your mind as clear As space; Detach from subjective imaginings And from all grasping, Making your mind unimpeded Wherever it turns. -- The Flower Ornament Sutra

He who does not strike nor makes others strike, who robs not nor makes others rob, sharing love with all that live, finds enmity with none. -- Itivuttaka

We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make our world. -- The Buddha

It is as though you have an eye That sees all forms But does not see itself. This is how your mind is. Its light penetrates everywhere And engulfs everything, So why does it not know itself? -- Foyan

Hate brings great misfortune, hate churns up and harms the mind; this fearful danger deep within most people do not understand. -- Itivuttaka

There is only one Guru, ever present, The Whole Universe is my Ashram, No need for a path that leads to Here, No departure where there is only arrival, No need to meditate for all is sacred, No need to find what never was lost. -- Eckhart

You deceive yourself when you think you're in control The Slayer must be Slain before the Bell doth Toll, You can't Seek the Truth because it can not be found Just let go of conditionings and Truth will be around. -- Yogajyotii

In order to experience fearlessness, it is necessary to experience fear. The essence of cowardice is NOT acknowledging the reality of fear. True fearlessness is not the reduction of fear, but going beyond fear. -- Chogyam Trungpa

Search back into your own vision. Think back to the mind that thinks. Who is it? -- Foyan

One should first establish oneself in what is proper and only then try to instruct others. Doing this, the wise one will not be criticized. -- Dhammapada

Once the ground of mind is clarified, There is no obstruction at all. You shed views and interpretations That are based on concepts such as Victory and defeat, self and others, Right and wrong. Thus you pass through all that And reach a realm of great rest and tranquility. -- Yuanwu

"As I am, so are others; as others are, so am I." Having thus identified self and others, harm no one nor have them harmed. -- Sutta Nipata

It is good to fall a few times, get hurt, stand up again - to go astray a few times. There is no harm. The moment you find you have gone astray, come back. Life has to be learned through trial and error. -- Osho

Few people believe their Inherent mind is Buddha. Most will not take this seriously, And therefore are cramped. They are wrapped up in illusions, cravings, Resentments, and other afflictions, All because they love the cave of ignorance. -- Fenyang

May all creatures, all living things, all beings one and all, experience good fortune only. May they not fall into harm. -- Anguttara Nikaya

It IS what it IS AS it IS and nothing more So it is mere distraction to wonder what it is for, You can't Truly Live Life projecting your notions They are based not on Fact but on emotions. -- Yogajyotii

Because you grasp labels and slogans, You are hindered by Those labels and slogans, Both those used in Ordinary life and those Considered sacred. Thus they obstruct your Perception of objective truth, And you cannot understand clearly. -- Linji

With all his attachments cut, with the heart's pining subdued, calm and serene and happy is he, for he has attained peace of mind. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Do not look for peace and freedom in the outside world. Real freedom and real happiness are inner states which are yours when you are in harmony with the divine. -- Ramdas

The sound of a swollen Mountain stream rapidly rushing Makes one know How very quickly life itself Is pressed along its course. -- Saigyo

Freedom from lust is happiness in the world, the going beyond all sensual desires. But the crushing out of the conceit "I am" - this is the highest happiness. -- Udana

Let go of those conditioned notions to get Free Of the Desire for the phenomenal so you can BE, Each step you take toward your Awakening Gets you closer to the Source of it's Beckoning. -- Yogajyotii

To shake off the dust of human ambition I sit on moss in Zen robes of stillness, While through the window, In the setting sun of late autumn, Falling leaves whirl And drop to the ground. -- Tesshu Tokusa

Each moment waking, sleeping, In my grass-thatched hut, I offer this prayer: Let us strive to save Others before ourselves. -- Dogen

Learn this from the waters: in mountain clefts and chasms, loud gush the streamlets, but great rivers flow silently. -- Sutta Nipata

By effort and heedfulness, discipline and self-mastery, let the wise one make for himself an island which no flood can overwhelm. -- Dhammapada

Because they have no high Opinions of themselves, The sages’ minds are luminous; Not caring for status, They become illustrious; Being without pride, They achieve success; Unassertive, they are supreme. Because they do not contend, No one contends with them. -- Lao-tzu

Just as a tree, though cut down, sprouts up again if its roots remain uncut and firm, even so, until the craving that lies dormant is rooted out, suffering springs up again and again. -- Dhammapada

Silent in body, silent in speech, silent in mind, without defilement, blessed with silence is the sage. He is truly washed of evil. -- Itivuttaka

To return to your original state of being, You must become a master of stillness. Activity for health’s sake, Never carried to the point of strain, Must alternate with perfect stillness. Sitting motionless as a rock, Turn next to stillness of mind. Close the gates of the senses. Fix your mind upon one object or, Even better, enter a state Of objectless awareness. Turn the mind in upon itself And contemplate the inner radiance.

The Divine Union anew each Present Moment Lives Can not be rendered tangibly rather Peace it Gives, As there is One Truth and One Reality to BE So too there is One Journey that Two can See. -- Yogajyotii

Good are friends when need arises; good is contentment with just what one has; good is merit when life is at an end, and good is the abandoning of all suffering. -- Dhammapada

Inside and outside are one, Movement and stillness are the same. In all these, functioning needs To be free and clear. If this is not so then All the Buddha’s holy sutras And all of the sayings of the patriarchs Become mere tangles of empty words. The Way of Zen And the Buddha-dharma Also become dead things. -- Torei

One who, while himself seeking happiness, does not oppress with violence other beings who also desire happiness, will find happiness hereafter. -- Dhammapada

Above all, don't wish to become a future Buddha; your only concern should be, as thought follows thought, to avoid clinging to any of them. -- Dogen

If your mind is fixed on a certain spot, It will be seized by that spot, And no activities can be performed efficiently. Not to fix your mind anywhere is essential. Not fixed anywhere, the mind is everywhere. The Original Mind is like water which flows freely, Whereas the deluded mind is like ice. There is a passage in the Diamond Sutra that says: "The mind should operate without abiding anywhere." -- Takuan

Who is energetic and not indolent, In misfortune unshaken, Flawless in manner and intelligent, Such a one to honour may attain. -- Digha Nikaya

Awakening is as encompassing as True Love As seen in the eyes of the new born the Wonder of, There is no forced Attention for All IS AS it IS Without projected conditioned notions of that or this. -- Yogajyotii

Zen practice is not clarifying conceptual distinctions, but throwing away one’s preconceived views and notions and the sacred texts and all the rest, and piercing through the layers of coverings over the spring of self behind them. All the holy ones have turned within and sought in the self, and by this went beyond all doubt. To turn within means all the 24 hours and in every situation, to pierce one by one through the layers covering the self, deeper and deeper, to a place that cannot be described. -- Daikaku

With firm resolve, guard your own mind! Whoso untiringly pursues the Dhamma and the Discipline Shall go beyond the round of births and make an end of suffering. -- Digha Nikaya

What do you mean by the true Buddha, The true Dharma and the true Way? Would you be good enough to explain to us? The Master said, Buddha - this is the cleanness And purity of the mind. The Dharma-this is the shining Brightness of the mind. The Way this is the light That is never obstructed anywhere. The three are in fact one. All are empty names and Have no true reality. -- Lin-chi

Who gives, his virtues shall increase; Who is self-curbed, no hatred bears; Whoso is skilled in virtue, evil shuns, And by the rooting out of lust and hate And all delusion, comes to be at peace. -- Digha Nikaya

No written word or practiced orientation or a Map Will ever guarantee that Divine Union will drop in lap, Neither Awakening or Love can be predictive Though once Awakened are very much addictive. -- Yogajyotii

Whoever through desire, hate or fear, Or ignorance should transgress the Dhamma, All his glory fades away Like the moon during the waning half. Whoever through desire, hate or fear, Or ignorance never transgresses the Dhamma, All his glory ever increases Like the moon during the waxing half. -- Digha Nikaya

Attaining the heart Of the sutra, Are not even the sounds Of the bustling marketplace The preaching of the Dharma? -- Dogen

The Art of Peace begins with you. Work on yourself and your appointed Task in the Art of Peace. Everyone has a spirit that can be refined, A body that can be trained in some manner, A suitable path to follow. You are here for no other purpose Than to realize your inner divinity And manifest your innate enlightenment. Foster peace in your own life And then apply the Art to all that you encounter. -- Morihei Ueshiba

The friend who is a helpmate, the friend in happiness and woe, the friend who gives good counsel, the friend who sympathises too -- these four as friends the wise behold and cherish them devotedly as does a mother her own child. -- Digha Nikaya

Harboring old conditioned notions Suffering it's Due Yet Divine Union is Free and Light and always New, You think those notions are protection and secure But a Lonely imprisonment is what you must endure. -- Yogajyotii

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned. -- The Buddha

People who really have Their minds on the Way Do not forget work on the fundamental No matter what they are doing. Yet if they still distinguish this work From ordinary activities Even as they do them together, They will naturally be concerned About being distracted by activities And forgetting the meditation work. This is because of viewing Things as outside the mind. -- Muso

Who is hospitable, and friendly, Liberal and unselfish, A guide, an instructor, a leader, Such a one to honour may attain. -- Digha Nikaya

Kill hatred and you shall have peace and happiness. Kill hatred and you shall have no more sorrow. It is hatred that devours all your goodness. -- Buddha

When you set out to look for the Way, At once it changes to something That is to be sought in your self. When sight becomes no-sight, You come to possess the jewel, But you have not yet fully penetrated into it. Suddenly one day everything is empty like space That has no inside or outside, no bottom or top, And you are aware of one principle Pervading all the ten thousand things. You know then that your heart Is so vast that it can never be measured. -- Daikaku

To have much wealth and ample gold and food, but to enjoy one's luxuries alone -- this is a cause of one's downfall. -- Sutta Nipata

When an error is made, the stupid blame, the conventional cluck, and the awake learn. -- Alan Harris

Takes a long time to find defilements not only a few Yet the Realization is instantaneous what we must do, Remain singularly focussed not being distracted Lest the Grand Trickster's disease be contracted. -- Yogajyotii

There are those who do not realize that one day we all must die. But those who do realize this settle their quarrels. -- Dhammapada

Silence is the door. Inner peace is the door. Non-violence is the door. Love and compassion are the doors. -- Hakuin

If the eye never sleeps, All dreams will naturally cease. If the mind makes no discriminations, The ten thousand things Are as they are, of single essence. To understand the mystery of the One-essence Is to be released from all entanglements. When all things are seen equally The timeless Self-essence is reached. No comparisons or analogies are possible In this causeless, relationless state. -- T’sen T’sang

Know this, O good man: evil things are difficult to control. Let not greed and wickedness drag you to protracted misery. -- Dhammapada

These towering crags of rock Stand with their feet in my heart, While their lingering patches of Summer snow glisten in front of, And behind my eyes. What need have we for more security? For we too nestle in those same Arms. So if we live or die, we face either Unconcerned like the glistening Snows beneath the summer sun. And, even though there is Nowhere to escape, together, We will melt serenly into the warm, Dry winds. -- Ji Aoi Isshi

One who destroys life, utters lies, takes what is not given, goes to another man's wife, and is addicted to intoxicating drinks -- such a man digs up his own root even in this world. -- Dhammapada

The self is a problem that thought cannot resolve. There must be an awareness which is not of thought. To be aware, without condemnation or justification, of the activities of the self - just to be aware - is sufficient. -- J. Krishnamurti

When most people hear That the Buddhas transmit the Teaching of the One Mind, They suppose that there Is something to be attained Or realized apart from mind, And they use mind to seek the teaching, Not realizing that mind and The object of their search are one. Mind can’t be used to seek mind; If it is, even after millions of eons Have gone by, the search will still not be over. -- Huang-Po

Difficult is life for the modest one who always seeks purity, is detached and unassuming, clean in life, and discerning. -- Dhammapada

The "original nature" is complete in itself and lacks nothing. It is up to everyone to discover one's original nature for oneself because there is no other path that leads to it. -- Yizhong

You'll not get anywhere along that Busy Highway It's not in what has been but what you ARE Today, Through the Valley of Suffering you must Walk Singing your Song Dancing your Dance you Talk. -- Yogajyotii

True study of the Way Does not rely on Knowledge and genius Or cleverness and brilliance. It is an easy thing, Just cultivate a Keen and sincere desire To seek the Way. -- Dogen

Just as rust arising from iron eats away the base from which it arises, even so, their own deeds lead transgressors to states of woe. -- Dhammapada

Lao-tze said to cultivate Tranquility and detachment. To be natural means not to force things. When you act natural, you get what you need, But to know what is natural, You have to cultivate tranquility. -- Master Hsieh

A person of the Way fundamentally Does not dwell anywhere. The consistent action of People of the Way is Like the flowing clouds With no grasping mind; Like the full moon reflecting universally, Not confined anywhere. Thus have we heard: The mind that Embraces the ten directions Does not stop anywhere. -- Hung-Chih

Overcome the angry by non-anger; overcome the wicked by goodness; overcome the miser by generosity; overcome the liar by truth. -- Dhammapada

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. -- Kahlil Gibran

So go Strut your Wares and do just what you will But when the Tally is taken what would you fulfill, Issue all a Blindfold so they don't see your Lies Make a Pact with the Devil so your Trick Flies. -- Yogajyotii
