All the holy ones have turned within and sought the self, and by this went beyond all doubt. To turn within means all the 24 hours and in every situation, to pierce one by one through the layers covering the self, deeper and deeper, to a place that cannot be described. It is when thinking comes to an end and making distinctions ceases, when wrong views and ideas disappear of themselves without having to be driven forth, when without being sought the true action and the true impulse appear of themselves. It is when one can know the truth of the heart. -- Daikaku

Consciousness plus conceptualization = Thought Consciousness minus conceptualization = Brahman -- Vashista

Few among men are those who cross to the farther shore. The rest, the bulk of men, only run up and down the hither bank. But those who act according to the perfectly taught Dhamma will cross the realm of Death, so difficult to cross. -- Dhammapada

Awakening does not mean that this particular form you inhabit should or will be a saint, or a great artist, or king of the world. It means you can know without a doubt that who you are is not limited to form. Who you are is what the world appears in, what the cosmos appears in, what space itself appears in. -- Gangagji

The Art of Peace begins with you. Work on yourself and your Appointed task in the Art of Peace. Everyone has a spirit that Can be refined, a body that Can be trained in some manner, A suitable path to follow. The ego can not really be controlled suppress it at best And by suppressing it will show up varied ways as Pest, What the foundation of the ego is conditioned contents When we let go the conditioned notions and remnants. -- Yogajyotii

In Tibetan, the word for body is 'lu', which means 'something you leave behind,' like baggage. Each time we say 'lu', it reminds us that we are only travellers, taking temporary refuge in this life and this body. -- Sogyal Rinpoche

Below the cliff, riding in a boat, I think of climbing up. The mountain temple is silent. It seems to have no monks. A falling star - a single dot - Plunges into the waves: It is a beam of lamplight From the Kannon Hall above. -- Ishikawa Jozan

One is the quest for worldly gain, and quite another is the path to Nibbana. Clearly understanding this, let not the monk, the disciple of the Buddha, be carried away by worldly acclaim, but develop detachment instead. -- Dhammapada

Some call Ego Death which is not really doing anything For the ego's but eliminating the Cause of ego rendering, The whole package is the conditioned notions that Veil And that package is processed as it is required to assail. -- Yogajyotii

That bhikkhu who has crossed the mire, Crushed the thorn of sensual desire, And reached the destruction of delusion Is not perturbed by pleasures and pains. -- Udana

Only one who bursts with Enthusiasm do I instruct; Only one who bubbles with Excitement do I enlighten. If I hold up one corner And you do not come back To me with the other three, I do not continue the lesson. -- Confucious

Well done is that action of doing which one repents not later, and the fruit of which, one reaps with delight and happiness. -- Dhammapada

How long it has been since The teaching of the pure Essence was swept away? Students are caught up With the written word And Buddhist priests are Stubbornly obsessed with doctrine. It’s a shame that for A thousand years No one has spoken Seriously of this essence. Better to follow the children And bounce a ball on these spring days. -- Ryokan

Though all his life a fool associates with a wise man, he no more comprehends the Truth than a spoon tastes the flavor of the soup. -- Dhammapada

Having entered a royal court or a company of people he should not speak lies. He should not speak lies (himself) nor incite others to do so. He should completely avoid falsehood. -- Sutta Nipata

The Cause is not the ego but rather the conditioned stuff Notions are the Cause of the ego and therefore enough, Yes let go the conditioned notions in a New York minute And take your long drawn out Texas time to enjoy doing it. -- Yogajyotii

Let there be space in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another, but make not a bond of love. Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. -- Khalil Gibran

Cease practice based On intellectual understanding, Pursuing words and Following after speech. Learn the backward Step that turns Your light inward To illuminate within. Body and mind of themselves Will drop away And your original face will be manifest. -- Dogen

Whoever takes a stick to beings desiring ease, when he himself is looking for ease, will meet with no ease after death. Whoever doesn't take a stick to beings desiring ease, when he himself is looking for ease, will meet with ease after death. -- Udana

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves. -- Buddha

If you think that you Have cut off illusory mind, Instead of simply clarifying How illusory mind melts, Illusory mind will come up again, As though you had cut off The stem of a blade of grass And left the root alive. -- Menzan Zuiho

Ever grows the glory of him who is energetic, mindful and pure in conduct, discerning and self-controlled, righteous and heedful. -- Dhammapada

You should each individually Clarify your own mind, Getting to the root Without pursuing the branches. Just get to the root, And the branches come of themselves. If you want to get to the root, Just get to know your mind. This mind is basically the root Of all mundane and supramundane Phenomena; as long as the mind Does not become obsessed with Good and bad, you will realize that All things are basically just so. -- Ta-mei

The wise ones, ever meditative and steadfastly persevering, alone experience Nibbana, the incomparable freedom from bondage. -- Dhammapada

What is the folly of volition other than the ability to choose Divine or otherwise is a contrivance of Duality so we lose, If All Is One who is to choose and what choices are there So who is there to create the Divine notion of what is fair. -- Yogajyotii

To study the Way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things. To be enlightened by all things is to remove the barriers between one's self and others. Then there is no trace of enlightenment, though enlightenment itself continues into one's daily life endlessly. -- Dogen

The sounds of streams are Buddha’s speech. The colored mountains are Buddha’s pure body. Night brings eighty-fourthousand poems of Buddha. Listen, someday you may awaken. -- Su Shih

Heedfulness is the path to the Deathless. Heedlessness is the path to death. The heedful die not. The heedless are as if dead already. -- Dhammapada

The wisdom of Enlightenment is inherent in every one of us. It is because of the delusion under which our mind works that we fail to realize it ourselves, and we seek the advice and the guidance of enlightened ones. -- Hui-neng

The past is past, and the future is yet to come. That means the future is in your hands-the future entirely depends on the present. That realization gives you a great responsibility. - -The Dalai Lama

It has been asked, "How should those who enter The path apply their minds?" All things are originally uncreated And presently undying. Just let your mind be free; You don’t have to restrain it. See directly and hear directly; Come directly and go directly. When you must go, then go; When you must stay, then stay. This is the true path. A scripture says, "Conditional existence is the site of enlightenment, insofar as you know it as it really is." -- Niu-t’ou Hui-chung

Blissful is passionlessness in the world, The overcoming of sensual desires; But the abolition of the conceit I am -- That is truly the supreme bliss. -- Udana

Keep to unity without shifting. With constant presence, Whether active or still, The student can see the Buddha nature clearly. -- Tao-hsin

Love is beauty and beauty is truth, and that is why in the beauty of a flower we can see the truth of the universe. -- Buddha

Be a person who dissolves into the present. Do not be a slave who carries the burden of the past and anticipates the future. Be like a boat that flows in time and space. -- Chung Po

What sages learn Is to return their nature To the beginning And let their minds Travel freely in Openness. What developed people learn, Is to link their nature To vast emptiness and Become aware of the Silent infinite. -- Huai-nan-tzu

The doer of good rejoices here and hereafter; he rejoices in both the worlds. He rejoices and exults, recollecting his own pure deeds -- Dhammapada

If you can be total in work, you can be total in no-work - just sitting silently, totally silent. You know how to be total. You can close your eyes and you can be totally in. You know the secret of being total. So to be total in work is helpful in meditation. -- Osho

Sleeping there is much to do because many are to do it But most conditioned notions are sticky and will not sit, We are not Unfolding a state of BEing this way for sure Due to not letting go of conditioned notions they endure. -- Yogajyotii

Heaven is calm and clear, Earth is stable and peaceful. Beings who lose these Qualities die, While those who Emulate them live. Calm spaciousness is the House of spiritual light; Open selflessness is the Abode of the Way. -- Huai-nan-tzu

He should not kill a living being, nor cause it to be killed, nor should he incite another to kill. Do not injure any being, either strong or weak, in the world. -- Sutta Nipata

Fantasized ideals often do not work in real life. When people cannot reach their preset goals, most of them can only blame themselves for not knowing the limits of their own capabilities. Know yourself and stay within your capabilities. -- Tsai Chih

As the gate of heaven opens and closes, Can you be impassive? As understanding reaches everywhere, Can you be innocent? Producing and developing, Producing without possessing, Doing without presuming, Growing without domineering: This is called mysterious power. -- Tao-te Ching

The evil-doer grieves here and hereafter; he grieves in both the worlds. He laments and is afflicted, recollecting his own impure deeds. -- Dhammapada

To maintain a steady mind which is not excited by out-of-the-ordinary events is "the way". --Tao

Carrying vitality and consciousness, Embracing them as one, Can you keep them from parting? Concentrating energy, Making it supple, Can you be like an infant? Purifying hidden perception, Can you make it flawless? Loving the people, Governing the nation, Can you be uncontrived? -- Tao-te Ching

When things become manifest To the ardent meditating brahmin, All his doubts then vanish since he understands Each thing along with its cause. -- Udana

The world presents itself according to the viewpoint of each person. Whatever kind of person one is, one will see that kind of world; whatever kind of mindset one has, one will derive that kind of conclusion. -- Fo Yin

Into a person, Absolutely free From thoughts and emotions, Even the tiger finds no room To insert its fierce claws. -- Shinkage-ryu

Just as rain breaks through an ill-thatched house, so passion penetrates an undeveloped mind. -- Dhammapada

Those who mistake the unessential to be essential and the essential to be unessential, dwelling in wrong thoughts, never arrive at the essential. -- Dhammapada

Since I came to this T’ien T’ai temple, How many winters and springs have passed? The mountains and the waters are unchanged; This man’s grown older. How many others will Watch those mountains stand? -- Shih-te

If one, longing for sensual pleasure, achieves h, yes, he's enraptured at heart. The mortal gets what he wants. But if for that person -longing, desiring- the pleasures diminish, he's shattered, as if shot with an arrow. -- Sutta Nipata

All that is is the result of what we have thought. -- Buddha

Sitting silently, doing nothing, Spring comes, and the grass grows by itself. -- Basho

Each multiple aspect of Consciousness seems to arise And have an Identity of it's own in conditioned eyes, All IS Consciousness though seeming each multiplicity Aspects of Consciousness are just Unified Complicity. -- Yogajyotii

The question clear, The answer deep, Each particle, Each instant a reality. A bird call shrills Through the mountain dawn; Look where the old Master sits, a rock, in Zen. -- Sodo

Better it is to live one day virtuous and meditative than to live a hundred years immoral and uncontrolled. -- Dhammapada

When you realize where you come from, you naturally become tolerant, disinterested, amused, kindhearted as a grandmother, dignified as a king. Immersed in the wonder of the Tao, you can deal with whatever life brings you, and when death comes, you are ready. -- Lao Tzu

Madness, the way they gallop off to foreign shores! Turning to the One Mind, I find my Buddhahood, Above self and others, beyond coming and going. This will remain when all else is gone. -- Tanzan

Let no one deceive another or despise anyone anywhere, or through anger or irritation wish for another to suffer. -- Sutta Nipata

The ego is constantly in search of being a boss - whatsoever the cost, at any cost. You are losing your whole opportunity of life just to fulfill a shadowy, non-substantial notion - the notion of ego: "I am somebody." Nobody is nobody. We are all one; we are not separate. -- Osho

The integrity of the Union/Whole is still Union/Whole It is our conditionings of separation that Digs the Hole, Thinking that there are parts of the Whole is Duality And that the flame separate from the fire is not Reality. -- Yogajyotii

One minute of sitting, one inch of Buddha. Like lightning all thoughts come and pass. Just once look into your mind-depths: Nothing else has ever been. -- Manzan

May all creatures, all living things, all beings one and all, experience good fortune only. May they not fall into harm. -- Anguttara Nikaya

Freedom is impersonal. It is not of the self, it is from the self. -- Thyoar

This affair is like the bright sun in the blue sky, shining clearly, changeless and motionless, without diminishing or increasing. It shines everywhere in the daily activities of everyone, appearing in everything. Though you try to grasp it, you cannot get it; though you try to abandon it, it always remains. It is vast and unobstructed, utterly empty. Like a gourd floating on water, it cannot be reined in or held down. Since ancient times, when good people of the Path have attained this, they’ve appeared and disappeared in the sea of birth and death, able to use it fully. There is no deficit or surplus: like cutting up sandalwood, each piece is it. -- Ta Hui

They do not lament over the past, they yearn not for what is to come, they maintain themselves in the present, thus their complexion is serene -- Samyutta Nikaya

Followers of the Way, do not be deceived by teachers who everywhere say "I know Zen, I understand the Way," and who endlessly deliver discussions like mountain torrents. All this is action that produces hellish Karma. If one is a true learner of the Way, one does not search for the faults of the world, but rather speedily applies oneself to attain genuine insight. If one only can see with perfect clarity, then all is completed. -- Rinzai

Above, across or back again, wherever he goes in the world let him carefully scrutinise the rise and fall of compounded things. -- Itivuttaka

We jump from out of the Frying Pan and into the Fire *You* and *I* are conditioned concepts arising Desire, They fall with our conditioned thoughts and emotions Yet Consciousness stays without conditioned notions. -- Yogajyotii
